Simulating Cloth

As you may have seen, we have recently posted a new animation dedicated to NICKMERCS; this features a Spartan walking down a corridor, picking up his sword, and preparing for battle. Not only are our animations butter-smooth (thank you to Vikas and his team, as well as our brand new Xsens suit!), we have now learned the art of cloth simulation.

A glaringly obvious example of this is the cloak that sways as the Centurion walks. For our eagle-eyed viewers, you can also see the leather skirt shift with his body too. We’re hoping that with this small improvement, our characters feel more alive than before.

Perhaps in the future, we will be able to have the same level of simulations like that of Disney and Pixar? We can only hope, and see what the future holds for Futhark Studios.

The Power of XSens!

In a previous blog, we mentioned how we had ordered the Rokoko suit, and had plans to buy an Xsens in the future. That day is finally here!

This suit is perfect for our office, and is quick and simple to put on. Not only is it picking up the basic movements when recording, but it is able to note the shifts in weight as our actors perform and act out the sequence needed. With this new piece of tech at our disposal, our animations are only going to become even more advanced. Plus, it will help our animation team by giving them a foundation to build their work on; let’s hope that this Xsens suit will help take off some of the pressure of tight deadlines!

Increasing Our Firepower With Textures

We have two new members to the Futhark Studios team: meet Christian and Joshua.While both are going to improve the textures in our scenes, each have their own areas of expertise that are going to take our animations to the next level!

Christian is tasked with environment set design and primary texturing. This involves any up-close shots that require high levels of detail.

Joshua will be taking care of the texturing on the models, as well as secondary textures for our backgrounds. While you may not be able to see the level of detail, it’s still there thanks to him!

With our two new additions, we will be able to completely customize the looks of any model, project or scene. We think that their skills speak for themselves in terms of the results from our latest pieces.

Animated Trees

Due to certain limitations, we have been unable to do animated trees in Blender – that is until now! There has been a new add-on available called Vegetation, that helps any animator make the perfect tree for their environment. Not only can we alter how the tree looks, but the wind strength can also be altered with the settings available. We will have trees for every weather with the randomize button, from a gentle breeze to a blowing gale.

Watch out world, Futhark Studios will now have moving trees in our animations!

Character Animation Just Got Easier

For a while now, we at Futhark Studios have been wanting a mocap suit to lessen the load for our animators; hand-animating is quite difficult, especially for complex human characters, and takes a considerable amount of time.

With a motion capture suit, we plan to release a lot more character video content – our current plan is to get our hands on a Rokoko suit. For future investments, our horizons are set on the XSens suit. Keep an eye out for future blogs about our progress!
